From das Gestell to Gelassenheit: Our Relationship to the Technological Self

This talk explores our everyday use of mobile media through a lens inspired by Friedrich Nietzsche and Martin Heidegger. Although arenas like Facebook, Instagram, and Twitter are often praised for the role they play in one’s ability to represent their identity, ignite dialogue, and unite populaces for a common cause, in my view we ought to equally be mindful of how mobile media practices often demonstrate the triumph of Nietzsche’s will to power and how the self and others are increasingly treated as Bestand, what Heidegger referred to as the standing reserve. This talk will link these two concepts with everyday mobile media practices, but close by suggesting such dangers can be countered via a blending of poiēsis, Aristotle’s term to describe a creative cultivation and Gelassenheit, defined by Dreyfus as „a serene openness to a possible change in our understanding of being”

(Dreyfus, 1991, p. 339).

Dr. Justin Michael Battin is an assistant professor in the Department of American and Canadian Studies at the University of Katowice in Silesia. Justin’s research interests include media anthropology, phenomenology, and mobile social media. Justin is the author of Mobile Media Technologies and Poiēsis (Palgrave, forthcoming 2017) and the co-editor of We Need to Talk About Martin: 12 Essays Situating Heidegger in Contemporary Media Studies (Peter Lang, forthcoming 2017).
